The Government of Canada continues to embrace and honour the Implementation Principles in the Federal Pathway to Address Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People. We understand that the way we work to address the root causes of violence is equally important as the results of these actions.
Respect for the human rights of Indigenous Peoples
- Ensuring that policies and practices align with and support the rights of Indigenous Peoples, including the individual and collective rights of Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people
Leadership of Indigenous families, survivors, women and 2SLGBTQI+ people
- Acknowledging the leadership of Indigenous women and 2SLGBTQI+ people, grassroots organizers, families and survivors
- Including key voices in conversations around the safety of Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people
A holistic approach
- Ending violence with a decolonized, holistic, long-lasting, comprehensive and multifaceted approach
Self-determined, Indigenous-led, grassroots solutions and services
- Restoring, respecting, upholding and promoting self-determination of Indigenous Peoples
- Supporting the implementation of Indigenous-led solutions and services
Cultural safety and humility
- Restoring relationships and maintaining partnerships with reciprocity and cultural competency
Trauma-informed approach
- Adopting a community-centred approach that supports healing
- Taking into account the lasting effects that trauma and violence have on survivors, families and communities
A focus on dignity and supporting power and place
- Honouring the strength, expertise, agency and diversity of Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people
- Restoring their central role in political, economic, social and cultural life
The Government of Canada aims to reflect these principles in the implementation of programs and initiatives to address violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people, both now and in the future.
